During my recent photography expedition in Japan, I had the pleasure of staying at Matakitai, which truly embodies the charm of a traditional Japanese guest house. Nestled away with a serene garden and free private parking, it proved to be an ideal launching pad for my outings. The rooms were clean and simply furnished, offering a cozy atmosphere perfect for unwinding after a day of capturing breathtaking landscapes. What made my stay even more delightful was the warm hospitality of the owner, Shin-san, whose enthusiasm for his surroundings enriched our experience. Although he isn’t fluent in English, his genuine willingness to help and engage in conversation made every interaction enjoyable. I particularly appreciated the shared kitchen and lounge, where the communal vibe allowed me to connect with fellow travelers, exchanging stories over a cup of tea after days spent exploring the nearby temples. Accessible via a short walk from the Ofunato line station, Matakitai is a budget-friendly gem that invites visitors to immerse themselves in Japanese culture while enjoying modern conveniences like free WiFi and air conditioning. If you’re seeking tranquility and a taste of local life, I wholeheartedly recommend this lovely retreat—one I’m eager to revisit on my next adventure in Japan!
